Acute/Chronic Pain & Injury Rehab

Acute Pain/Injury

Definition: Pain or injury that occurs suddenly, usually from trauma (e.g., sprains, fractures, post-surgery).
Duration: Short-term (less than 3 months).
Goal of Rehab:
● Reduce inflammation & swelling● Restore range of motion● Prevent complications (like stiffness or muscle atrophy)● Gradually return to function

Chronic Pain/Injury

Definition: Pain that persists beyond normal tissue healing time (typically longer than 3-6 months).
Common Conditions: Arthritis, fibromyalgia, nerve damage, old unresolved injuries.
Goal of Rehab:
● Improve function & quality of life● Manage pain (not always eliminate)● Address biomechanical, neurological, and psychological factors● Use multidisciplinary strategies (PT, OT, pain management, CBT)
